Information on the shared health record

What is the shared health record?

This is a set of documents that your healthcare providers decide to share because they are necessary and relevant for better management of your health.

These documents include the summarised health file (known as SumEHR by healthcare professionals). This is an important document for getting an overview of your state of health.

This exchange of information between your healthcare providers is only possible if you have given your consent to the sharing of your health data.

How can I access it?

To access your shared health record, you need to connect to the Brussels Health Network.
Patient connexion

      • either with your identity card (eID) + card reader + pin code
      • or with the Itsme application
      • or with a digital key (request from BOSA offices)

By logging in, you enable all the healthcare professionals who treat you to consult and publish your medical data and history quickly and securely. And you too can access your health record.

What can I do in my patient's profile?

The Brussels Health Network gives patients a great deal of power through its portal.

You can :

  • Consult the list of shared documents and their content (if the author of the document has opened the access)
  • Consult your summary electronic health record (SumEHR) created by your general practitioner
  • Check and manage access to your documents
  • Manage your therapeutic relationships
  • Register a trusted person
  • Register as a legal guardian for children under the age of 12

Access conditions

There are three conditions for the professionals who treat you to access your health data online. If one of these conditions is not met, the healthcare provider will not have access to your data. Find out more here.

1. Consent

Informed consent is the agreement you give as a patient to the principle of sharing health data between the various health professionals who treat you (via health networks). It is free and nationwide.

You can give your consent via: your GP, pharmacy, hospital, the Brussels Health Network portal, etc. You are free to revoke it at any time. In the same way as you gave it.

2. Therapeutic relationships

A “therapeutic link” is created when there is contact between a patient and a healthcare provider (GP, specialist, pharmacist, physiotherapist, nurse, midwife, dentist, paramedic, etc.) as part of a healthcare relationship.

This therapeutic link is created directly by the healthcare provider via their software during your consultation. This means that your company doctor, your mutual insurance company doctor or your insurance company doctor do not have access to your health data.

The duration of the therapeutic link varies according to the context of your treatment and the type of relationship you have with the healthcare professional.

    3. The access matrix

Depending on their access rights, each category of professional has access to certain shared data. Access rules vary according to the professionals who consult your data.

The people around me can play a role in my health

    Registering a trusted support person

If you find it difficult to manage your health record due to a loss of autonomy, you can designate one or more trusted support persons. This person will be able to access and manage your shared health record. However, you alone will be able to make decisions about your health.

Register as my child’s legal representative

As a parent, you can register with our administration as the person legally responsible for accessing the health data of your child(ren) under the age of 12. The same applies if you are responsible for a patient, whether a minor or an adult, who is unable to express his or her rights.
